Three Ways to Make Your Sketchbook More Captivating

Updated: Mar 4, 2024

Sketchbooks can be filled with all kinds of art, but sometimes it can get repetitive. Here are 3 different ways to make your art more interesting!

1) Cut and Paste

What better way to make your sketchbook more interesting than by cutting out doodles that you do on homework or random scraps of paper! I often draw my best pieces of art when I not drawing inside my sketchbook, so I just cut them out and paste them in!

2) Experiment with Different Art Materials

When your sketchbook is filled with pencil drawings, it can be more eye catching if you add some color. The best way I did this was by using acrylic paints. Acrylics have a different texture than pencil sketches and watercolors, creating more vibrant pages. It also gave my art levels, as I was able to raise the leaves by applying more paint onto them and letting it dry.

3) Draw like a Little Kid

Now, this one might seem strange, but some of my favorite pieces of art I've created are from when I was little. They had so much life and creativity in them. So, whenever I'm feeling like my art is looking the same one sketch after another, I draw like a 6-year-old version of me.

I love drawing monsters, stuffed animals, anything and everything. This also takes a lot of pressure away when I'm creating because it isn't meant to be realistic or technically perfect. It is just my imagination run wild, honoring how my art was originally. Because in order for us to become better artists, we need to recognize our original capabilities before our need to create for others.

One of the ways I try to reach a more child-like perspective for creating art is by doing a little art exercise I did in 4th grade. My teacher, Mrs. Carson, (who is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had) drew a couple random lines on our papers and had us interpret them into our own drawings.

This is also a great activity to do with your friends! My friend and I passed the drawing to each other, adding certain lines and shapes to create this sock puppet dinosaur on the left!

Drawing like a child can be really freeing. There are no expectations, only you and the page.

In the end, art is still art. Sketchbooks are for learning and exploring. So, it's great push yourself out of your comfort zone, but if some pages look a little similar, it's still creating art. So go out and create some art with heart!
